Supporting Responsible End-of-Life Management for Solar Panels
As solar energy continues to expand worldwide, the global photovoltaic (PV) industry is approaching the first large wave of end-of-life solar panels. Responsible collection, recycling, and reuse of retired panels is becoming a critical challenge for sustainable energy development.
To contribute to the development of a reliable recycling ecosystem, GBP has joined the Solar Panel Reuse & Recycling Association of Japan, an industry organization promoting collaborative frameworks for proper panel disposal and material recovery.
Key challenges facing the solar recycling sector include:
· Limited recycling infrastructure and processing capacity globally
· Lack of industry collaboration for consistent recycled material quality
· Risks of improper disposal or storage of retired panels, which can affect both environmental and operational outcomes
Through its membership, GBP aims to share operational experience and technical expertise to support the creation of effective recycling systems. Leveraging its O&M and asset renewal operations, the company facilitates responsible collection and handling of decommissioned panels, while experience gained at GBP’s Kita-Ibaraki factory contributes to industry-wide discussions on collaborative frameworks and circular resource management.
With PV systems installed over the past two decades approaching the end of their lifecycle, industry collaboration and knowledge sharing will play a key role in building reliable recycling infrastructure—both in Japan and globally—ensuring sustainable management of solar materials and supporting the long-term growth of renewable energy.
